Worthing Borough Council has resumed repair work on Worthing Pier, with the installation of new support piles beginning during low tide on 9 September.
The attraction was temporarily closed in October 2024 following storm damage, and has since been reopened in stages following the construction of a steel support frame.
“The teams have to use the spring low tide window to drive four 4m-long piles into the beach,” said a council spokesperson. “A second set of 4m-long piles are then welded on top of them, so that in total each foundation pile is driven 8m into the ground.”
“The next stage of the project will see columns installed which will stand on top of the piles and support the pier from below, so the temporary steel support structure that is currently in place can be removed.”
The council added the repairs are now forecast to cost £550,000 in total, £380,000 lower than previous estimates.
