Astro Property approved for Ashford AGC despite wild claims that venue will “attract dubious characters”

Astro Property (MK) Ltd has been granted planning approval for a new AGC in Ashford following an appeal against a previous refusal, with the venue set to revitalise the ground floor of a former Barclays Bank branch.

Spelthorne Borough Council approved the plans after requesting a restriction of opening hours and anti-noise pollution measures, in response to morality concerns lodged by local residents.

“Previously attacked by residents as ‘morally wrong’ for Ashford, a planning inspector ruled in favour of the application on 16 April,” wrote the Local democracy Reporting Service. “But extra conditions have been strapped on to developers Astro Property (MK) Ltd.”

“Initially put forward as a 24hr gambling scheme, planning inspectorate N. Praine decided the gaming shop can only open between 9am-11pm. Developers are also required to make sure the sound insulation from the separating floors remains intact so as not to disturb the upstairs neighbours.”

Opponents to the proposal had previously suggested the AGC would “attract dubious characters” and “create more opportunity for poverty,” however Paine wrote “the demands and habits of the community change over time and a healthy town centre needs to respond to these changes.”

“A suitable mix of uses and facilities is essential to serve the interests of all members of society to make choices in which leisure activities they may wish to engage in.”
