Henry Danter is selling the Carousel AGC in Monmouth town centre, after a two year planning battle which saw the Barry island Pleasure Park owner forced to appeal to the Welsh Government.
Henry Danter is selling a Grade II-listed property on Monnow Street in Monmouthshire after a two-year battle to secure planning permission that would allow him to transform the vacant music shop into an AGC.
Danter has owned the premises overlooking Agincourt Square for 30 years, and despite being granted a gaming licence for the venue in 2021, met substantial opposition from local residents and councillors when it came to planning permission.
“The plan attracted a storm of opposition, with planners receiving a 529-name petition and some 300 objection letters,” reported the Abergavenny Chronicle. “The town council objected to the plans and the chamber of trade said it was ‘completely inappropriate’ for the ‘attractive and historic’ square.”
“But when Monmouthshire Council planners turned the scheme down, Mr Danter appealed to the Welsh Government’s planning inspectorate and won.”
Which is no surprise given the flaws in the council’s decision to decline the application in the first place.
His appeal noted that the council’s rejection was “not credible and biased,” having been “swayed” by people who objected on moral grounds.
However, the 2,642 sq ft Carousel premises has now been placed on the market for £225,000, with estate agent David James stating the building “presents a range of potential use and redevelopment opportunities, subject to planning approval.”
“The property benefits from accommodation over four floors with access points to the front and side elevations providing flexible use and redevelopment opportunities subject to planning.”
“Requiring sympathetic modernisation throughout, the property provides an excellent investment or redevelopment opportunity in the popular market town of Monmouth.”
