Mecca Bingo has reported that the fate of its Scarborough venue is “still under review” after reports circulated that the Albemarle Club was earmarked for closure.
A Mecca spokesperson confirmed that a decision will be made on the venue later this month.
“We are approaching the end of the lease on our club in Scarborough,” said the company. “The proposal to close the venue is still under review and the consultation process will conclude this month.
“Once a final decision is made, we will advise our customers of the outcome (and closure date, if appropriate) once we have spoken to our colleagues in Scarborough. Scarborough is the only club that is currently under review and at this stage there are no plans to open a new venue in the area.”
Initial reports had stated the bingo club was to close on 23 November, prompting outcry from both players and local residents, who took to social media to champion the important role the heritage bingo hall plays in the community.
“It’s never an easy decision to close a venue,” said Mecca. “We value our customers and know what an important role our clubs play in bringing communities together.
