Industry mourns the passing of UDC’s Derek Horwood

The amusements industry is mourning the loss of a highly-respected and long-serving figure, Derek Horwood, chairman of United Distributing Company (UDC), who passed away at home in North London on 9 July 2025, aged 91.

“It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our Chairman Mr Derek Horwood today after a short illness,” read a statement from UDC. “Derek passed away at home in North London surrounded by his wife Sheila and children Tracy, Mark and Lindsay. Derek devoted his life to our industry, firstly with his father and then with his son Mark here at UDC.”

A message from Bacta President Joseph Cullis also paid tribute to Horwood’s immense legacy. 

“Derek’s contribution to the amusement sector spanned decades. He was not only a successful businessman but also a mentor, a colleague, and a passionate advocate for the industry he helped shape. He led with integrity and generosity, and his wisdom and warmth left a mark on everyone who had the privilege to know him,” commented Cullis. 

“The loss of someone of Derek’s stature will be felt deeply by many across the industry. On behalf of Bacta, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those at UDC.”

The statement from UDC concluded: “The whole of UDC mourns this loss and will remember Derek as the true gentleman and scholar that he was.”

The funeral will be held on 10 July at Bushey New Cemetery, Little Bushey Lane, WD23 3FF. UDC has advised those wishing to attend to contact Nicci on 07376 063123 for details.
