Palace Amusements’ plans to open an AGC in the London area of Golders Green have been met with a campaign of opposition, including an 800-signature open letter, objections from local councillors, and warnings of risk to children from the MP for Finchley.
The proposals for 4 to 6 North End Road were submitted to Barnet Council in September, and have since attracted a considerable amount of protest from local residents and business owners, who maintain approval would conflict with the Local Plan.
“Golders Green does not need another gambling venue,” said MP Sarah Sackman. “Residents have been clear: this application poses a risk to children, to vulnerable people, and to the safety and cohesion of our community.”
“We must act to prevent gambling from becoming a source of crime and disorder.”
Despite the grounds being unfounded, the campaign is backed by ‘never let the truth get in the way of a good media story’ councillors, and cites the proposed AGC’s proximity to schools – actually a dental school and a nursery – and places of worship, as well as the location of a number of other existing gambling venues within a 270 metre radius.
Councillor Giulia Innocenti said: “We are completely opposed to the possibility of yet another adult gaming centre in the heart of the town centre and local conservation area.”
“We need to revitalise our high streets and protect them from the over-proliferation of venues such as these that offer nothing to their local communities.”
