More signatures needed to help recognise fairgrounds in the UK inventory of ICH

Further signatures are needed on a petition asking the government to recognise circus and fairgrounds as part of the UK’s intangible cultural heritage, with just 1,300 more required for an official response.

The petition, which expires on 15 April 2026, highlights the fact that historic fairs form an important part of the country’s cultural fabric and represent a way of life for travelling Showpeople.

“This culture is not one of the protected characteristics associated with visible ethnic minority or faith groups,” states the petition. “Show people represent a diverse group but have in common the need to travel to present their entertainment offering.”

“We feel only government recognition via the ICH inventory can provide the assurance for this way of life to continue.”

The petition has so far attracted support from more than 8,750 signatories, with campaign groups such as Future 4 Fairgrounds urging more people to lend their support.

“If you love the fairground and everything a funfair means then please take a look at this as there are more signatures needed!”
