One week after Winners Bingo in Wisbech announced it would be closing its doors with immediate effect, a petition to save the Blackfriars Road venue has reached 350 signatures.

The decision to close was based on a 40 percent decline in footfall since 2020, however regular player Donna Wright urged the community to show their support for the venue.

“Our local community needs our bingo hall,” said Wright on the petition page. “The Empire has long hosted the bingo and for a lot of people it is literally a lifeline.”

“It’s not just bingo, it’s a social hub. Amazing staff and great atmosphere. It needs sponsors, local support and council backing. Our town needs this. Don’t let another Wisbech staple go.”

Announcing the decision on 13 July, Winners told regulars that “income has not been generating enough profits to cover increasing costs.”

“We thank our wonderful staff and customers for their continued support over many years.”
