More than 110,000 handmade poppies have been unveiled along Southend Pier in Essex, creating a striking tribute ahead of Remembrance Day. The crocheted flowers, donated by contributors from across the globe, now stretch the full 1.33-mile length of the world’s longest pleasure pier. The memorial will be open to the public from 5 to 16 November.
The installation was assembled by more than 1,000 volunteers, many of whom spent months helping to coordinate, sort, and attach the poppies.
Essex Poppy Appeal manager Kirsten Swan described the display as deeply meaningful, saying: “It is a symbol of remembrance, it is a symbol of hope, and I think that still resonates with a lot of people.”
Organisers hope the display will encourage reflection on the sacrifices made by servicemen and women, while also highlighting the power of community collaboration. Visitors are invited to walk the pier and support this year’s Poppy Appeal.
