Saltburn Pier to close temporarily for essential safety improvements

Saltburn Pier will close temporarily to allow essential safety improvements after routine inspections highlighted the need to replace more than 100 decking boards. The Grade II listed structure will also see the removal of redundant lighting and cabling from the underside of the deck.

Redcar and Cleveland Council’s cabinet report confirmed the £22,000 repair project, warning that delaying the work would accelerate the pier’s deterioration and pose increased health and safety risks to visitors. A council spokesman said the repairs are expected to take place next month, but added that weather conditions will be a key factor.

“The work will involve replacing boards and removing redundant lighting,” he said. “The closure of the pier will be kept to a minimum and it is hoped there will be restricted access when safe to do so. The repairs are expected to take three weeks to complete, weather permitting.”

Built in the Victorian era, the pier, which marked its 150th anniversary in 2019, has weathered severe storms over the years and underwent significant restorations in 1978 and 2000. The pier is the last remaining of its kind on the North-East coast and the northernmost in Britain, with operator Seldon’s Leisureworld’s Pier Amusements, “arguably the most picturesque arcade in the UK”, gracing its shore end.
