Southend Pier to become “river of red” with a knitted Remembrance Day poppy display

Southend Pier has called on local knitters to create hundreds of handmade poppies to line the pier for Remembrance Day 2025, turning the landmark attraction into a “river of red.”

The display is intended to stretch the entire length of the pier between 5 and 16 November, as a “poignant tribute” marking the anniversary of the Armistice.

“For us to reach our goal of lining the 1.33 miles of the pier, we’re calling on the creative community to help us by making as many poppies as you can,” said a spokesperson.

“Whether you knit or crochet, every poppy is special and your handiwork will join a river of red, stretching along the pier and making this tribute truly unforgettable. We need as many poppies as possible, so whether you can make one or one hundred, each one matters and you’ll be a part of something truly special.”

Patterns for the poppies are available via the RBL website, while finished poppies can be donated before 26 September at the Pier, the city’s civic centre and libraries, Westcliff Wools, and the Corringham Fire Station.
