Southend Pier has been named number one in the Top 50 Icons of Essex list, compiled by Visit Essex following a public vote.
More than 1,600 residents submitted nominations for the title, with the pier triumphing over Adventure Island, Colchester Zoo and Hedingham Castle.
“Southend Pier and Railway holds a special place in the hearts of residents and visitors alike,” said councillor Matt Dent. “This latest recognition, following the Pier of the Year award in 2023, is a testament to Southend Pier’s enduring appeal and the civic pride it instils in our community.”
“It’s a place of history, beauty, and enjoyment, drawing visitors not just from Essex, but from across the world. We are committed to ensuring it remains a top destination for generations to come.”
More than 200 locations across the county made the longlist for the Icon title, with the Echo noting the award “highlights the pier and railway’s significance not only as a cherished Southend landmark but also as a defining symbol of Essex.”
