Vale of Glamorgan Council has voted to move ahead with plans to remove free parking at Barry Island and Penarth, despite objections from local traders.
The proposal was also met with “outrage” from visitors and residents when first mooted in March, however the changes will now likely take place later this year.
“The council’s cabinet members resolved on Thursday, 3 July, to move forward with the scheme, saying increased revenue would safeguard the region’s seaside attractions and boost visitor numbers,” reported Wales Online.
“Additionally, the decision includes shutting down Court Road multi-storey car park in Barry, as initially intended.”
Though the council has committed to reassessing the on-street parking fees in both Barry and Penarth in two years, Wales Online added: “There is concern among traders about the potential downturn during the winter months, a period when they typically depend on local visitors.”
