West Midlands Police raid illegal gambling dens

West Midlands Police is continuing to crack down on illegal gambling premises across the region, with the force’s Birmingham Serious Organised Crime and Exploitation Team raiding four sites this year.

As part of Operation Fearless, police have issued warnings to both the proprietors of black market gaming dens and those visiting, advising that those attending illegal premises are at risk of “exploitation and further financial harm.”

“Our evidence has led us to enforce at four illegal gambling dens so far this year, and our thorough investigations are continuing,” said a spokesperson. “One building housing a gambling den on Bishop Street was closed entirely by West Midlands Fire Service due to the dangerous conditions fire officers found inside.”

“At another, on Ladywell Walk, officers seized large amounts of cash, class A and B drugs, weapons, as well as two gaming machines. But, we know that illicit gambling nights exist in a variety of premises, and those attending may not always be aware of the risks around them.”

Highlighting the potential dangers, the police shared photographs that show how victims can be targeted by a covert infrared camera, monitoring specially marked cards on the poker table.

“We are continuing to investigate this using a range of tactics.”
