BALPPA has expressed “delight” at the success of the government’s Great British Summer Savings scheme, with CEO Paul Kelly encouraging ministers to roll out a permanent reduction in VAT for UK attractions to help boost the industry.
One month after the launch of the Great British Summer Savings scheme, UK attractions have called on ministers to extend the VAT cut year round, highlighting the positive effect the reduction has had on visitor numbers.
The 5 percent rate was introduced on 25 June and will run until 1 September, however BALPPA chief executive Paul Kelly expressed his hope that a long-term cut could prove transformative for the sector.
“BALPPA has been delighted to be part of the process of setting up the Great British Summer Savings scheme,” CEO Paul Kelly told blooloop.
“There is no doubt this reduction will help families visit more of the fabulous attractions all over the country. We hope the government will see the success of this scheme and make a permanently lower level of VAT in the UK.”
Though the choice to pass on savings to customers is optional, the majority of UK attractions have cut prices to encourage more families to visit during the summer holidays, including Merlin Attractions, which rolled-out lower prices for both tickets and kid’s meals.
“We’re excited to welcome more families to our resort theme parks and immersive experiences for a summer packed with fun, play and lasting memories,” said CEO Fiona Eastwood.
Adventure Island seized the opportunity of the VAT reduction to give all customers purchasing day wristbands an annual pass, with owner Philip Miller stating “we’ve only really been able to take that chance because of Rachel Reeves and her vision.”
“If the VAT cut was made permanent, it would put rockets on growth and expansion. We would straight away start shopping for a major roller coaster.”
High hopes for hospitality
