Blackpool council refuses South Pier ride plans for a second time

Blackpool Council has once again rejected Blackpool Pier Company’s plans to install rides at the head of the South Pier, after stating the proposed log flume and a star flyer “would not fit well in the setting.”

The company had been seeking a Certificate of Proposed Lawfulness for the rides following the local authority’s decision to refuse full planning permission in September, however the plans still proved contentious.

“Going by submissions made with the planning application, it is understood that whilst there would be no bolting or suchlike to the ground, the structures would include elements of considerable weight to prevent them from being moved by the wind and as such they would have a physical attachment to the ground,” stated the report.

“It is plain that once built, it would not be possible to move them without dismantling them. In summary, the proposed structures would be operational development and therefore their siting would require planning permission. No express planning permission for their siting exists.”

The Blackpool Pier Company had hoped the rides would boost tourism to both the South Pier and the coast in general, however planners decided their installation “would not be lawful.”
