Blackpool Council reopens search for  investor for £300m regeneration project

Almost a year after the collapse of the £300m Blackpool Central regeneration project, Blackpool Council has launched a new tender process to try and attract a new investor for the entertainment and leisure complex.

The redevelopment was shelved in November 2024 after anchor investor Nikal Ltd entered administration, despite the first stages of planning and demolition having already taken place, with councillors now keen to resurrect the scheme.

“Blackpool Council has begun a tender exercise for a property marketing agent to help find new international investors for the ten acre site,” reported the BBC.

“It comes as work to demolish the old police headquarters and courthouse on the development site has now been completed.”

Blackpool Central was to have featured two indoor theme parks, a 200-bedroom hotel, a heritage quarter, theatre, and space for bars and restaurants, all built on the site of the city’s former train station.

Blackpool’s Conservative leader Paul Galley criticised the latest tender, stating: “It’s going to be played out in the same way it always is in Blackpool, where the council will pay some very expensive experts to come in and tell them what’s right for Blackpool rather than listen to the people of the town.”
