Butlin’s confirms decision to cut 250 jobs in an “unsurprising”response to rising cost pressures

Butlin’s has announced it will shed 250 jobs this season in response to the “heavy impact” of business rates and wage rises, as well as the proposed tourism tax.

The holiday park operator is currently celebrating its 90th anniversary, however a series of “changes to resort structure” will now result in a contraction of its workforce.

“The UK economy remains challenging and businesses like Butlin’s have been heavily impacted by the business rates hikes, on top of the jobs tax and potential holiday tax,” said a spokesperson for the company.

“As a result, there have been changes to our resort structure, which means we have had to make some job cuts.”

The holiday park brand, which once operated nine sites across the UK, operates three remaining resorts; Minehead, Skegness and Bognor Regis, each affected by rising cost across the sector.

Speaking on the announcement, Dr Kathryn Ferry, an academic specialising in the history of the British seaside holiday, told the BBC: “Butlin’s has been in business for 90 years so they obviously know how to weather these kinds of storms.”

“The whole of the hospitality industry across the UK is feeling the pinch so it’s sadly unsurprising they are looking at it.”
