Family entertainment centres in Cleethorpes are expected to suffer a loss of footfall as Pier Gardens remains closed for up to 14 months, with no compensation offered to affected businesses.
The popular green space, surrounded by FECs such as Kingpin Arcade, The Mint and The Empire, has been shut since February 2026 for a major regeneration project funded by the government’s Levelling Up Fund. Plans include a skate park, water features and a small amphitheatre, but the full closure has raised concerns among nearby businesses reliant on footfall.
Businesses along the seafront, which depend heavily on passing visitors, are among those likely to be hardest hit. Reduced access routes, construction hoardings and diverted bus stops are expected to further limit visitor numbers during peak seasons.
Local councillor Malcolm Morland questioned why phased works were not possible, asking why the entire site must be closed at once. However, council leaders said the contractor had identified “extensive risks” that would prevent safe public access if the site remained partially open.
Despite acknowledging disruption, North East Lincolnshire Council confirmed that compensation for loss of earnings will not be available. Instead, additional signage will be installed to remind visitors that local businesses, including FECs, remain open.
