GGY for retail gambling during the third quarter of 2024/25 was up 5 percent, according to the latest figures from the Gambling Commission, despite a 4 percent drop in the number of bets and spins.
The Gambling Commission has released its latest business data from the betting sector on the quarter to December 2024, which reveals a 5 percent increase in total retail GGY to £592m.
The figures are drawn from submissions by “the biggest operators,” covering approximately 85 percent of the market, and presented without comment by the regulator.
In December 2024, GGY for over-the-counter bets reached £55.3m, up from £51.9m the prior year. However the November 2024 total of £49m was down on the Q3 2023 average of £51m.
SSBT GGY was significantly up on the 2023 quarter, reaching a high of £54.5m in November last year, more than double the total recorded in October 2023, however machines GGY was down comparatively for each month, falling as low as £90.8m in December 2024.
In terms of machine sessions, average figures for the most recent quarter were down 3.6 compared to 2023, falling from 7.8 million to 7.5 million, even though sessions lasting more than an hour increased across the board, from 586,604 in Q3 2023 to 621,772 over the last quarter.
Overall, the total number of bets and spins also decreased year-on-year, falling 4 percent to 3.1 billion.
Just over 134.8 million bets were made Over The Counter in Q3 2023, an average of 44.9 million per month, while in Q3 2024, 130.1 million were made, a monthly average of 43.3 million.
For SSBTs, 38.6 million bets were made during Q3 2023, an average of 12.8 million per month, with the number increasing to 39.5 million during Q3 2024, an average of 13.2 million per month.
Machines saw the greatest decline in the number of bets and spins made, despite remaining the most popular means of betting, with 3.08 billion bets placed in Q3 2023, a monthly average of 1.02 billion, while during the last quarter, those figures fell to a total of 2.9 billion, and an average of 987m each month.
