Derek Webb’s CFG states illegal gambling accounts for 9 percent of UK market

A new report from the Campaign for Fairer Gambling has stated that illegal gambling accounts for more than 9 percent of the UK market share, with 89 percent of illegal sports streaming linked to unlicensed wagering.

The CFG, founded and funded by anti-gambling campaigner Derek Webb, analysed figures from data platform Yield Sec to record 1.6 billion illegal stream views of sports events in the first half of 2025 alone.

“The Gambling Commission and the Betting and Gaming Council both ignored advice concerning the black market from Yield Sec for many years,” said Webb. “Treasury has now provided funding to the Gambling Commission to enforce against illegal operators but their understanding is insufficient.”

According to the report, offshore providers generated £379m during the first six months of 2025, almost 10 percent of the UK’s £8.2bn total betting revenue, compared with just two percent in 2022.

Yield Sec data also suggests the number of illegal sports streams jumped from 1.8 billion in 2022 to 3.6 billion last year.

Founder of Yield Sec, Ismail Vali, said the growth of the black market “hurts the most vulnerable of audiences.”

“What does crime do with all of the money it takes by stealing from local commerce, community and consumers? It makes more crime.”
