Gambling Commission starts the search for a permanent Chairman

The Gambling Commission has commenced the official search for a new Chairman to succeed former Chair Marcus Boyle and replace interim office holder Charles Counsell. The brief sounds extremely rational and balanced, but whether that is what earns the appointment is another thing.

The Gambling Commissions is seeking “a strategic leader looking to shape the future of a high-profile national regulator” as it accepts applications for a new chair.

The role has been filled in an interim capacity by Charles Counsell for over a year, however the organisation is now seeking to appoint a successor to serve for the next five years.

“The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate that they can command the confidence of the companies and organisations within the gambling industry and work constructively with the National Lottery operator, as well as have empathy and respect within the consumer landscape,” states the job specification.

“The role demands close working relationships with diverse stakeholders, however, the candidate must also demonstrate the ability to ensure sufficient detachment to be seen as independent and driving standards within the industry.”

The Commission states it is seeking those with impartial and independent judgement, commercial experience and expertise, integrity and an understanding of corporate governance, as well as the ability to lead an organisation in “a high-profile and emotive policy area.”

A knowledge of the workings of Government “would be a particular advantage,” as well as knowledge of the sector, however the specification notes “they will be impartial, free from bias about the gambling industry and those that participate in gambling.”
