Godden Gaming eyes Bridgwater as the home for its new AGC

Godden Gaming has submitted plans to Somerset Council to open a new AGC in Bridgwater, occupying a town centre retail unit vacant since former occupant WH Smith closed in 2024.

The council agreed a premises license for the Cornhill venue in October, however councillors are currently considering full planning permission, with public consultation open until 3 March.

“The proposed development will enable the occupation of a retail unit which has been vacant for over 18 months,” states the submission, submitted by Quod. “It will also enhance the vitality and viability of Bridgwater Town Centre whilst delivering additional jobs.

“This is particularly important given the increasing number of vacant units within Bridgwater Town Centre and specifically the Primary Shopping Area.”

If approved, the AGC would create one part-time and seven full-time jobs, as well as revitalising the frontage of the empty unit.

“The proposed shopfront alterations are minor in nature and will not result in harm to the significance of the Conservation Area or the nearby listed buildings.”

“Finally, the proposed 24-hour-a-day, 7-day-a-week operation will not adversely affect residential amenity. The proposal will also not increase anti-social behaviour within the area.”

Prior to Godden Gaming’s acquisition, Boyle Sports had previously expressed interest in opening an LBO in the unit.
