Government to trial green audit scheme to reduce pub energy bills

A new government-backed scheme will be trialled to help independent pubs, cafes and restaurants reduce soaring energy bills through greener practices.

Launched as part of the government’s Plan for Change, the trial will support over 600 small and medium-sized hospitality businesses by offering free audits and tailored advice. The scheme is expected to save the sector £3m in energy costs and cut carbon emissions by 2,700 tonnes.

Delivered by sustainability specialists Zero Carbon Services, the programme provides each participating venue with a personalised carbon reduction plan and three months of coaching support.

“Most venues have opportunities to save energy, food and money without realising it,” said

Mark Chapman, CEO of Zero Carbon Services. “By combining smart data with one-to-one coaching, we help operators take simple, practical steps to reduce waste, lower emissions, and improve day-to-day efficiency. It’s about making small changes that add up.”

The scheme will run from May 2025 to March 2026, with businesses to be selected at random to be involved in the trial phase. Those selected will be contacted this month – but they must already have a smart meter installed to be eligible.
