Hollywood Bowl has responded to claims that its new Inverness alley was behind the recent closure of local independent alley Rollerbowl, which had operated in the city for more than 35 years.
Rollerbowl owner Shahid Yusaf had accused the national entertainment group of “stepping on my toes” when it opened on Eastfield Way earlier this year, however a spokesperson dismissed the suggestion.
“The leisure industry, like other sectors across the UK, is facing up to difficult decisions about the future of business due to an unprecedented operating climate,” said Hollywood Bowl. “It’s always sad to see an independent bowling alley close its doors after playing an important part in the community for so long.”
“Since our opening in April, we’ve received lots of positive guest feedback from bowling fans and local families, who have enjoyed visiting the centre and who value having a modern entertainment destination in Inverness.”
Rollerbowl will officially close in October, with Yusaf telling the Press and Journal “It’s very emotional.”
“I have a handful of staff who have been with me for 35 years. So you can imagine trying to break the news to them, it has been a very difficult decision.”
“There’s just not enough business in Inverness for two bowling places and that’s the bottom line.”
