Local community rallies to FreePlay FEC’s “last resort” call for support

After penning a “last resort” call for support on Facebook, the operator of FreePlay in Portland was “absolutely blown away by the feedback, support and advice” he received from the community, with locals both promising to visit and recommending marketing strategies in an effort to boost the fortunes of the fledgling business.

The people of Weymouth and Portland have come out in overwhelming support of a local FEC operator struggling to find its feet.

Three months after opening, FreePlay is on its “4th weekend of little to no bookings”, according to owner Mike Saxton, who warned his local community on Facebook that “the business will not survive” much longer.

“This really is a case of use it or lose it,” he said. “Writing this has not been taken lightly, it’s actually quite embarrassing to have to post this. But I couldn’t just sell up and disappear without letting people know the situation.”

In response to his plea, the local community offered feedback, support and advice that Saxton was “absolutely blown away by”. Many comments encouraged the operator to up its marketing, suggesting advertising at holiday parks and community hubs, as well as on social media.

“I had no idea you guys even existed until I saw a shared post and my son would love the use of this, I run my own business in the town and am more than happy to have leaflets or a poster to help with advertising,” said local businesswoman Kelly Gilbert. “There is so little for kids to do and I advocate anything that keeps them entertained.”

Others suggested that the operator updates its website to make it clear exactly what’s on offer at FreePlay.

“It would be great to have a bit more about what you are on the website with some pics of what you have,” commented local Sarah Stockham. “Showcase your offer more with highlights of the games you have and that will definitely help with traffic.”

Many commenters also assured Saxton that they would be bringing their kids soon, with some even promising to host their children’s birthday party there. This overwhelming show of support by locals highlights the value that FECs hold to the communities across the UK – and like any good operator, Saxton appreciated the honest feedback.

“Big up Weymouth and Portland,” he said. “I’ll find some way of thanking you all”.
