Mecca Bingo is in discussions regarding the closure of its club in Scarborough, as its lease of the venue on Albemarle Crescent comes to an end.
Though Mecca has had a presence in the North Yorkshire resort for nearly 50 years, the company announced it was reviewing its future in the town.
“As our lease approaches its end, a proposal to close our club on Albemarle Crescent is being discussed,” said a spokesperson. “It’s a difficult decision, but we’re in consultation with our team and hope to reach a final outcome next month.”
“We’ll let our team and guests know as soon as a decision is finalised.”
Mecca first opened a bingo hall at the Capitol Theatre in 1977, and the venue currently employs 21 staff members, however no statement has yet been made on whether the team will be redeployed, or made redundant.
“The closure affects staff, regulars, and the wider community who’ve shared laughter, wins, and memories within its walls,” reported What’s On Scarborough. “It’s more than just bingo – it’s the loss of a social hub that brought people together.”
“Let’s hope this isn’t the final chapter for the venue, and that something new and exciting can rise from its legacy.”
