More reform on the cards? GC’s Tim Miller looks ahead to “rapidly evolving” gambling landscape

Gambling Commission executive director Tim Miller has not ruled out further reform as part of the regulator’s response to the “rapidly evolving” industry, despite implementation of the White Paper recommendations still lagging behind schedule.

In his recent address to the Peers for Gambling Reform Summit, Miller claimed the Commission had already made “clear progress” in delivering a significant portion of changes, a necessity brought about by “egregious failures” across the industry.

“It may prove that further reform will be needed in the future,” said Miller. “The gambling industry is a rapidly evolving landscape where the risks and challenges change equally quickly.”

“Let’s not forget as well that some in the gambling industry also have to own the fact their actions created the environment where reform was absolutely needed. Some of the egregious failures that we saw in our own casework over the years demonstrated that.”

Despite noting that he had worked with “many operators who have taken the lessons from our casework seriously” and met the requisite standards, Miller added: “I have also worked with some who needed to be dragged along that journey kicking and screaming – along with some that weren’t able or willing to make that journey and are consequently no longer part of the industry.”
