MP Richard Baker calls for gambling tax to be “fair, progressive and economically sound”

Glenrothes and Mid Fife MP Richard Baker has thrown his support behind the UK gambling industry, highlighting the £6.8bn contribution the sector makes to the economy every year, and calling for a “fair, progressive and economically sound” tax system.

Labour MP Richard Baker has spoken out in support of the UK gambling and betting sector in an effort to ensure any new taxes levied on the sector are “fair, progressive and economically sound.”

In an article published on Politics Home, the representative for Glenrothes and Mid Fife highlighted the industry’s £6.8bn contribution to the economy, and urged policymakers to consider the negative impact of punitive tariffs.

“For most people, betting is a normal part of their leisure time, and the industry contributes billions in tax and thousands of jobs, while supporting vital causes including sport,” said Baker. “No-one disputes the need to keep tax policy under review. But any reform must be carefully considered along with any potential unintended consequences – not just for the sector itself, but for the sports and communities that benefit from it.”

Noting that the regulated sector generates £4bn annually in tax and supports 109,000 jobs, Baker added:  “It also underpins the financial model of many sports, helping clubs stay afloat and thrive.”

“Just as importantly, the regulated sector provides vital consumer protections. It is important to consider how by making betting too expensive, some punters may be pushed toward the unregulated black market.”

Concluding his argument, Baker made an impassioned plea for “a tax regime that is fair, progressive and economically sound – one that protects the public, supports jobs, and rewards responsibility.”

“If we want thriving high streets, strong communities, world-class sport, and a safe environment for those who choose to bet, then we must ensure that our tax regime supports a sustainable, regulated betting market.”
