Mumbles Pier resubmits   its application to restore full length of Swansea’s landmark attraction

The Amusement Equipment Company owned by Bert and Fred Bollom has resubmitted plans to Swansea Council to begin the final stages of restoration at Mumbles Pier, after initial permission granted in 2021 expired.

The Amusement Equipment Company has resubmitted plans to commence the final stages of renovation and redevelopment at Mumbles Pier, after the five-year deadline to begin work set by Swansea Council expired this year.

Owners Bert and Fred Bollom lodged proposals to restore the full length of the pier and the former lifeboat station, add parking, a seafront boardwalk, and a headland hotel in 2021, however two major fires and wider economic turbulence have since impacted the project.

“Planning approval for the latter phases of Mumbles Pier’s restoration, approved in 2021, expired this year after the five year commencement timescale was passed,” it has been reported locally.

The National Piers Society was particularly excited at the prospect of the prized pier pushing forward with its plans. It wrote in its weekly despatch: “A new planning application has been submitted to seek permission for this commencement timescale to be extended, allowing for outstanding planning conditions to be addressed and (hopefully) construction to begin relatively soon. It would undoubtedly be wonderful to see the pre-Pandemic restoration progress at the pier finally resume and reach completion.”

The multi-million pound redevelopment project, which includes replacing the bridge leading from the pier to the lifeboat house, has been postponed following major setbacks, such as the fire in 2022 that destroyed the Copperfish restaurant, nightclub building and Beaches and Cream kiosk, and a second fire which damaged the arcade in 2024.

The latest planning extension will also allow the Bolloms to resolve outstanding planning conditions, such as the accommodation of kittiwake nesting ledges.

“Environment body Natural Resources Wales has previously said Mumbles Pier was one of the largest and most important nesting sites for the birds in Wales,” reported Wales Online.
