New consultation on Universal theme park plans launched…

Less than two weeks after Universal Destinations and Experiences submitted planning proposals for its new theme park in Bedford, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government has launched an open consultation on the plans.

The ministry is inviting public comment on the Environmental Statement, Non-Technical Summary, and the planning merits of the proposal, and will be accepting responses until 31 August.

“The proposed development does not accord with the provisions of the development plan in force in the area in which the land to which the Proposal relates is situated,” wrote the MHCLG.

“MHCLG has been asked to consider granting planning permission by making a Special Development Order for the Proposal under Section 59 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.”

The plans, drawings, Environmental Statement, and other associated documents submitted with the proposal can be viewed via the government’s website, with comments submitted through the MHCLG’s Citizen Space portal.

Universal announces plans for Europe’s tallest roller coaster

Universal is hoping to construct Europe’s tallest roller coaster at its new Bedford park, with planning documents requesting permission to reach up to 115 metres.

If approved, the company will be able to top the 112 metre-high Red Force at PortAventura World in Spain, and dwarf the UK’s current leader, the 72 metre Hyperia at Thorpe Park.

“The reason for proposing structures up to this maximum height is to allow the proposed theme park to compete with other attractions in Europe,” state the documents.

“Although the Universal Orlando Resort does not currently have attractions up to this height, taller attractions are more common in Europe, where rides need to be taller to create the experience, as space is more constrained.”
