Online and land-based GGY down for third quarter 2025/26 but online slots surge

The latest data published by the Gambling Commission has revealed that GGY for the UK land-based sector fell 7 percent over the third quarter of 2025/26, while online GGY dropped 3 percent, as the online slots market continues to grow.

The Gambling Commission has released the latest data concerning player behaviour for the third quarter of 2025/26, which reveals a decline in both online and land-based gross gaming yield, despite a marked growth in online slot participation for the third consecutive quarter.

GGY for the land-based sector fell 7 percent year-on-year, while online the decline was 2 percent down on the same period on 2024/25, however players continued to gravitate towards online slots, despite the introduction of stake limits in 2025.

“Betting premises GGY decreased by 7 percent to £549m in Q3 2025 to 2026, compared to the same quarter last year,” reported the Commission. “The number of total bets and spins decreased by 1 percent to 3.1 billion.”

Data from the biggest licensed betting operators, which covers approximately 90 percent of the retail betting market, revealed that GGY derived from over the counter bets between October to December fell from £130.1m in 2024 to £127.9m in 2025, while GGY from machines dropped from £2.96bn to £2.93bn.

Yield from SSBTs, however, showed a marginal increase, rising from £39.5m to £39.6m.

Though recording an overall decline, the online sector fared far better, with total online GGY for the quarter reaching £1.5bn, with the overall number of total bets and spins increasing 6 percent to 27.4 billion.

“Real event betting GGY decreased by 18 percent YoY to £530m. The number of bets decreased 6 percent, while the average monthly active accounts in Q3 decreased 7 percent.”

“Slots GGY increased 10 percent to £788m YoY. The number of spins increased 7 percent to 25.7 billion while the average monthly active accounts in Q3 increased 5 percent to 4.6 million per month. The GGY and number of spins represented new peaks for this dataset for the third quarter in a row.”

The increase is particularly notable as Q3 2024/25 is also the third quarter since the maximum stake limit for online slots games was introduced.
