Plans submitted to turn the abandoned Pleasure Island theme park into a “Center Parcs by the sea”

Long-awaited plans for the future of the abandoned Pleasure Island theme park site in Cleethorpes have now been submitted to North East Lincolnshire Council, with £70m set to be invested in redeveloping the site as “Center Parcs by the sea.”

Plans have been submitted for the much-anticipated redevelopment of the former Pleasure Island theme park in Cleethorpes, first proposed in 2023 as a joint venture between the Yeung Property Group, Seaside Getaways Ltd, and Church Lane Humberston Ltd.

According to the submission, the scheme will create a “Center Parcs by the sea,” with £70m invested in building two hotels, 272 holiday lodges, a conference centre, casino, leisure centre, Lidl superstore and cycle facilities on the 60-acre plot.

“85 percent of the site will be dedicated to leisure and recreational uses,” said James Cox, director at planning consultancy Lichfields. “These will include indoor leisure facilities, food and drink outlets, play parks and cycle hire.”

“The proposed retail uses support the overall viability of the development, particularly in serving the needs of holiday lodge users, and are ancillary in nature to the more extensive leisure offering.”

The Pleasure Island theme park site has remained vacant since the park closed in 2016, with the development expected to enhance the town’s appeal to visitors, while creating more than 800 jobs during the construction phase alone.

In recommending the plans for approval, North East Lincolnshire Council’s planning committee said the project would “support tourism in the local area but is diverse in its nature as to create an attraction for local people to enjoy, which also includes the retention of a key pedestrian route through to the beach.”

However, councillors deferred a final decision during a meeting this month following a late-stage legal challenge from Tesco regarding the anticipated economic impact of the new Lidl store.
