The MP for Scarborough and Whitby has urged the government to introduce a Minister for Coastal Communities in order to address the “unique challenges” faced by seaside towns.
After meeting with 66 coastal MPs during the recent Labour party conference, Alison Hume called for the Plan for Change to include a “transformative agenda” for the coast.
“Scarborough and Whitby, like other coastal communities, is among the most beautiful constituencies in the country,” said Hume. “Behind our magnificent landscape, however, we face a host of unique challenges.”
“Unless these are overcome, the talent and creativity of the people who live here will never be fully realised.”
Acknowledging the impact of the former Labour government’s London Challenge, which “transformed the educational outcomes of young people in the capital,” Hume said “those on the coast need the same.”
“I’m delighted to be working with fellow Labour MP’s representing coastal areas to ensure this government delivers an equally transformative agenda to our towns.”
