London-based Showman Robert Manning has passed away after being diagnosed and receiving treatment for cancer, with friends and family remembering the “well-known, respected and much loved Showman and family man.”
Manning’s diagnosis had previously seen Showmen raise thousands of pounds through a raffle of donated prizes, and his death has been met with a number of tributes and fond memories from the funfair and amusements industry.
“It is with great sadness and regret that we have to announce the passing of our dad Robert Manning who passed away on 3 April with his loved ones by his side,” said a statement from the Manning family.
“The funeral will take place on Thursday 24 April, leaving 2 Lakeview, Moreton, Ongar, Essex CM5 0GQ at 12.30pm. The service will take place at St Catherine and St Paul’s church, Paul’s lane, Hoddesdon EN11 8TR at 1.30pm.”
In December, Harry Ayers and Harry Parrish had organised a raffle to help the Manning family navigate the financial impact of the diagnosis until they could sell their home, with the Showmen community rallying to raise £58,000 in support.
“We’re lucky to be in a close knit community,” said Manning at the time. “Ain’t no people like show-people.”
