The Ball brothers urge ministers to recognise the value of seaside arcades

Clacton Pier owners Billy and Elliot Ball are keeping up the pressure on the government to recognise the essential part arcades play in sustaining the seaside economy, as operators continue to face rising costs and taxes.

Speaking to Clacton and Frinton Gazette, the brothers highlighted the fact that traditional amusements are what attracts many families to the coast, and urged MPs to consider the impact on small businesses when deciding the upcoming Budget.

“The arcade machines and penny pushers are just as relevant and popular now as they have always been,” said Billy Ball.

“The younger generation is enjoying them just as much as their grandparents did when they were that age, and still do. They remain a fun, family activity for all.”

The Balls, who are fifth generation arcade operators on both sides of the family, have invested heavily in ensuring Clacton Pier remains a major tourist attraction, however further increases to outgoings could have a major impact on the future of the attraction.

“It truly is a labour of love for us and one that continues to be appreciated by our loyal customers,” added Elliot Ball. “Those trips are all about making memories that last forever and are still very much enjoyed by all ages.”
