Universal Studios officially submits first plans for Bedford theme park

Universal Destinations and Experiences has officially submitted plans for its Bedford theme park to the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government, with the hope of securing a Special Development Order to undertake the next steps of development.

The prospects of getting the proposal through is pretty strong, the project is, after all, sponsored by DCMS.

The Universal plans outline an “entertainment resort complex” featuring themed lands, accommodation, and a range of retail, dining and entertainment uses, which it is estimated will create 28,000 jobs.

“Once the request is received, MHCLG will be inviting representations on the Environmental Statement that accompanies the request, as well as the other documents, plans, and drawings submitted in relation to the proposed development,” said a spokesperson.

“Details of where the material can be expected and how to make a representation will be available in due course. Any comments on the submitted proposals should be sent to MHCLG through the channels provided, not Universal.”

Universal added its first European venture is expected to have “a transformative impact on the Bedford and UK economy, generating £50bn over the next 30 years.

“At opening, the entertainment resort complex would be one of the largest employers in the region, with approximately 80 percent of employees expected to come from Bedford, Central Bedfordshire, Luton and Milton Keynes.”
