West Side Story: Works progress on reroofing as Clacton Pier masterplan continues its momentum

Work to bring the west side of Clacton Pier up to the standard of the east side has taken a major step forward as contractors complete a reroofing project costing tens of thousands of pounds, part of a wider masterplan to “safeguard the pier for future generations.”

Clacton Pier is making “steady progress” on its plan to renovate the west side of the pier, with contractors coming to the end of a reroofing project costing tens of thousands of pounds.

The scheme will fully weatherproof and insulate the attractions below, and comes after the pier’s  bosses,  the pioneering Ball brothers,  spent £130,000 on revamping the Boardwalk Bar and Grill and staff offices earlier this year.

“In 2018 we carried out a multi-million pound revamp of the east side and it had a significant impact on the operation as a large amount of space was out of action for a period of time,” said pier director Billy Ball.

“The scheme on the other side will be undertaken in stages and will happen over a number of years rather than months – and largely without disruption. At the end of the programme the west side will be brought up to the very high standards of the east side; it will just take us a bit longer to get there.”

The improvements will also include an enhanced arcade workshop space, a goods in area for the amusements prize stores, an improved service compound, enhanced staff room facilities and waste management area.

“This is all part of our ongoing commitment to continuing to upgrade the attraction and safeguard it for future generations to enjoy,” added Ball.

“We have learnt from our 15 plus years of owning the pier that its evolution is vital to keep people’s interest and see them returning year after year. It is all part of our success story and will definitely continue.”
